The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a hearing on airbag defects of the Japanese supplier Takata, and the recall process of millions of vehicles equipped with them. The defects have been linked to at least five deaths and more than 100 injuries.
Witnesses included a senior official with the Takata Corporation, Honda and Chrysler representatives, and the acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who said Takata was resisting the government’s request to expand the nationwide recall. Stephanie Erdman, the first witness, was a victim of the airbag defect.
